I bought this at a Black Friday price of $50 and I’d say it’s worth that. But, had I paid the regular price of $130, I’d be disappointed. Yes, Corel has a legitimate need to discourage unscrupulous customers from buying the home version and using it professionally so, I understand their removing features which are important to pros, like Prepress. But, Corel doesn’t stop there. They cripple the Home version in what seems like a thousand ways.

I’ll give just one example that really irritates me. With the full version, you can enlarge the tool icons and the menu fonts but, Corel killed that feature on the Home version. That’s just seems petty to me, especially since the tiny defaults (and they are tiny) are probably more of a problem for retired hobbyists like me than for young working professionals.

It doesn’t stop there, though. Lots of features are removed or crippled on the Home version. You keep discovering more and more as you learn the program. There’s the same note at the end of each section of Help that points out that some features are missing in the Home version but, it doesn’t tell you which ones. In many cases, you have to experiment to find out. How much trouble would it have been to tell you which features had been crippled?

Still, x6 has some cool new shape modifying tools that are a lot fun to play around with. If you buy the Home version, though, be prepared to be annoyed often as you get familiar with it.

I have used Corel Draw for Years … professionally, but not so professionally anymore – so I got the home & student version thinking it would be the same, just for home use. It is NOT the same as the regular X6 version – they have purposefully restricted many nice and helpful features – for example, you cannot customize toolbars!! seriously?? That is SOOO annoying and not even called for. Who knows how many other basic useful features they’ve disable! I am throwing this version in the trash!

While the home and student version of Corel does a lot, it fails to have the same type capability to customize the work space as the full version does. One very exasperating thing about it is that you can not change the fact that the program treats all areas as filled even when it is not. This can be corrected in the full version by searching in the set-up section but can not be corrected in the home and student version. This is a major drawback to this version.

This review is from: HDR Efex Pro After the Shoot (After the Shoot (Wiley)) (Paperback)
For people interested in computer processing of high dynamic range (HDR) photographs, not the least of the attractions of NIK Software’s HDR Efex Pro is that it has fewer sliders than its leading competitor, Photomatix Pro. But even so, what happens to an image when a slider is moved is still not instinctive. Stan Sholik to the rescue!

“After the Shoot” is quite simply the best explanation around for how to use HDR Efex Pro. After a brief discussion of the nature of HDR photography, the author eschews the usual review of the capture methods for HDR photographs, referring the reader to the vast literature on the subject. Instead he jumps right into the discussion of the software. He explains each of the options in great detail so that there can be little doubt in the mind of the reader just what each control does. For example he includes a detailed discussion of HDR modes, a function that may not be immediately obvious. Each of these modes creates a specific combination of the positions of sliders like exposure, contrast and structure that result in images ranging from realistic to various varieties of surrealistic. The author suggests that these modes form a starting point for further processing for the photographer to capture his or her vision. The author makes a general classification of the mode into one of three categories: naturalistic, artistic and extreme. Next he explains what the effect looks like and for what it is useful. Finally he shows four different images, processed with the mode, at increasing settings of the method strength (a critical settings slider of HDR Efex Pro). This same level of detail is explored for each of the global and local adjustments possible.

The explanations are well supported by the graphics. Instead of merely providing an impossible to read screen shot, the book shows large-scale reproductions of just the important parts of the screen, making it extremely easy to see. Where an explanation requires a screen shot, it goes from one margin to the other.

The level of detail is almost pedantic, but that’s just fine for software that’s almost as difficult to use as Photoshop itself. Because the book provides this level of detail and is so useful as a reference, it makes me think that HDR Efex Pro should be my default software for HDR processing, even though it may not provide some of the features of Photomatix Pro, like batch processing.

The book can serve as a model for technical software explanations. Indeed, my hope is that now the publisher will produce books for NIK’s other software, like Color Efex Pro, where there is a similar need for detailed explanations of the facilities.

If you intend to capture HDR images, you must read this book. I don’t mean that it will be of general help for HDR photography. For example, it will not be useful if you are using Photomatix Pro. But it will give you more confidence in using HDR Efex Pro than you will get with any other book to date about any HDR software and that confidence may well lead you to making HDR Efex Pro your default HDR software,

    Simplified a Complex Program, November 23, 2011

I wouldn’t get HDR Efex Pro without this book. The program is GREAT…if you know how to use it. For me, the only way to figure out how to do so was by reading this. For a beginner, the program can seem pretty complex and confusing, but this book simplified it for me. I have a pretty good grasp on it now and I’m turning out some great photos. It’s not only taught me to use the program, I also feel like I’ve become a bit of a better photographer.

The book HDR Efex Pro® After the Shoot is an excellent companion with the software. If you own Efex Pro, this is a must! The explanations are well supported by the screen shots graphics. The author takes the three most popular software packages through install, setup and configuration of Efex pro®. In many cases, the author provides a 1, 2, 3 set-by-step process to perform a task. This is great because one always wants to know if their configuration is corrects. He explains each of the options in great detail so that there can be little doubt as to the control and its effect on the image.
