This is a well-researched and well-written book to aid therapists who wish to publish. It addresses issues from maintaining confidentiality when writing about patients, to logistical issues about the ins and outs of the publishing world. Ms. Cary has created a wonderful product that will meet the needs of psychologists, social workers, and other psychotherapists who wish to publish a book or ebook. Her experience in the field through publishing herself is evident, and she provides practical guidelines and step-by-step tips for readers. I highly recommend that any therapist who wishes to publish someday obtain a copy of this book!

Excellent resource for not just therapists, but for all writers, November 3, 2012

Ms. Cary’s book covers it all. She encourages the shy therapist who may not feel she has anything to offer. She injects a dose of reality to those who are sure that creating a book is a snap.

Her advice does not end with the writing of the book. She covers publishing options and their pros and cons. Query letters, media kits, books proposals and acquiring an agent are all discussed thoroughly. The aspiring writer is not left wondering about marketing and all that must happen after you type The End.

Throughout the book and in a handy section at the end are hundreds of useful links and resources. The author supplements her teaching with real life examples of therapists who have written books, and done well with them.

If you’ve ever wondered about writing a book, this is a must-read book. The tone is encouraging, the language clear. I read a lot of writing books and have a book on a bestseller list, but I learned a lot from “The Therapist Writer”. My Kindle edition is full of bookmarks, highlights and notes.

Exceptional material for writers, October 4, 2012

Sylvia Cary’s book, The therapist Writer is a treasure trove of information for writers of all genres. It’s easy to read and follow with two chapters devoted to marketing. Sylvia has obviously put a ton of work and effort into this marvelous book and all writers will be pleased at the information she has saved them from having to find themselves. I highly, highly recommend it. Stefanie Stolinsky, Ph.D.

Very good follow up to his first book, July 12, 2011

I bought Mr. Matthews’ ebook on marketing and selling ebooks at the same time I purchased this one. While that one focuses a lot on marketing and selling (duh, right?), this has more in the way of setting up free websites and blogs with little to no knowledge of HTML.

As I just recently self pubbed my first short novel/novella, I wanted to see what I could do setting up a website for little to no money. (I’m the stereotypical cash-strapped writer, lol.) The website I was contemplating setting up was an all modular, drag and drop-type of set up, but I felt the cost on a monthly basis just doesn’t work at this point in time.

So I got this book. And it pointed me in directions I never thought about. It discussed certain things about websites I’d never considered. As I already have a free blog, I didn’t pay as much attention to that, but I’ll re-read because I figure I can only better my blog with more suggestions. 🙂

And his advice on using a Google external tool for a domain name – it was the easiest explanation for using that particular tool that I’ve ever seen.

Well worth the (paltry) price for the ebook version.

Jason Matthews has written a practical, no-fluff guide to creating free blogs and websites. I learned a things or two from his comparison of blogs and websites, something I never really understood. He lists a variety of free hosting options and offers pros and cons to each. He presents the clearest and most straightforward treatment of Search Engine Optimization I have ever seen; and I appreciated his plain talk about the fact that his suggestions will not make you a great success overnight. Creeping up from obscurity to prominent ranking in the search engines can be and probably will be a long, incremental process.

Matthews gives a good overview of the technical difficulty of various hosting options from having to code and upload your own site, to WYSIWYG editors, to visual editors, to drag and drop templates. Each has its advantages and limitations.

Best of all, everything in this book is in plain English that anyone from beginner to proficient can understand. That is an accomplishment of its own! I have seen few books so well written yet able to offer something new to someone like myself who has experience building websites.

On the other hand, you will not be an expert after reading this book. You will understand your options for free hosting. You will understand the advantages of blogs and websites and why you may want both. You will understand how to select a host based on your experience and site building skills.

All in all, I would say you can’t do better for the price.
